#BSLbytes #117: Paws for Hope
Posted by Chantelle Mackney on
On Fridays, we feature other hard-working groups fighting BSL in Canada and beyond. Paws for Hope advocates for improved animal welfare and better animal protection measures in British Columbia. The organization has always been a strong supporter of evidence-based, breed-neutral legislation. They have partnered with and co-presented with Hugabull Advocacy & Rescue Society on a number of occasions, and they have a position statement in support of breed-neutral dangerous dog legislation on their website. A recent project is the Animal Welfare Advisory Network (AWAN BC). The Network is composed of responsible BC non-profit organizations who have undergone a screening process...
#BSLbytes #118 The many faces of BSL

This infographic was created by Selma Mulvey of the Dog Legislation Council of Canada. A true warrior against bsl who sadly passed away and never got to see the day in which Ontario woke up and repealed BSL. May she rest in peace and may her wit, knowledge and hope for a better future continue to pave the path to those of us fighting for a better tomorrow. All of these dogs have been labelled "pit bulls" and targeted under the breed ban in Ontario. It truly illustrates that no mixed breed is safe under this legislation. #endBSL #notoBill128 #Canada150 #BSLbytes --- For background...
#BSLbytes #119: Benevolent Bully Rescue

"Previous to working in rescue, I had – like most – some personal experiences with bully breed type dogs. And of course I had encountered the general public’s urban legends that had come with their reputation as well. But after years of working in rescue, I have been able to form an actual experience-based opinion. Long story short? These types of dogs pose no more danger than any other dog. As someone who now rescues ALL of the bully breeds, having to deal with BSL affects us in every way possible. Based on judgements that never seem to have consistency...
#BSLbytes #122: Denver, Colorado

It’s “where the heck is BSL anyway?” Wednesday. This week we head south of the Canadian border and focus on a major BSL offender: Denver, Colorado Denver is home to approximately 600,000 people and to an animal control ordinance that openly discriminates against “pit bull” type dogs. On August 7, 1989, a “pit bull” ban was put into force that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of family pets and unclaimed dogs. A “pit bull” for the purposes of this ordinance is defined as “any dog that is an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or...
What's the big deal anyways

“ I don’t get what the big deal is. People choose to get those kinds of dogs. So what if they have to muzzle them.” “Muzzle/leash/spay & neuter are things you should be doing anyway…so what if you are required to do them because of breed-specific laws?” Have you ever heard comments along these lines, sometimes even from people who claim to be allies? Statements like these lead us to believe that many people are unaware of what breed specific legislation really is, and how many areas of our everyday lives it can effect. You vote for government trusting that...
